Libertarian Republican #262

For the record, I have changed the title of my blog back to Existential Commentary.

Some of my friends asked me to.

I have no argument on maintaining some consistency for other people.

Libertarian Republican #261

Just a note for all those who read my nightly blogs.

I have dropped Existential Commentary and changed it to Libertarian Republican.

It simplifies matters for those who may be new and unsure of the title.

Libertarian Republican #260

Illegal Drugs for Medical Purposes.

People raise these plants because the sale of them as products is profitable.

People use these drugs for medical purposes or recreation purposes.

Europe has legalized such drugs with mixed success.

China had its opium problem in the 1800s.

The closest analogy to dealing with this issue is alcohol.

Alcohol was declared illegal during prohibition with a lot of negative effects.

Alcohol is used for recreational purposes, some abuse purposes, and some medical purposes.

It is sold legally, regulated, and taxed heavily.

We still have problems with individuals and alcohol, but that may be the result of stess of family, work, or some genetic factor.

I support the legalization of certain drugs for medical purposes, but I do not support the legalization of all drugs for recreational purposes.

In essence, what is a hard drug and a drug for medical purposes in terms of illegal drugs.

Libertarian Republican #259

Nuclear Power.

We've had nuclear power since the 1950s.

There have been two accidents since that time: Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

The technology of today is a lot safer than 25 years ago.

Its clean energy, except for the radioactive waste.

Do we have a way of storing the waste or reusing it or destroying it.

Its cheap energy for the most part.

European Countries use it widely in their power systems.

Yucca Mountain may or may not be a good place to store the waste.

I just wonder if there is some area in the South Pacific where it could be stored, reprocessed or destroy with little effect on the environment or people.

Its a long term solution to an energy problem that is only going to get bigger as time goes by.

In essence, I support nuclear power as a solution to the energy problem, but I am wondering why we haven't looked to the South Pacific for a disposal site.

Libertarian Republican #258

The Senate's Global Warming Debate.

I know the weather is acting crazy, but are we going to walk the plank alone.

With the Senate Rules, the minority can leave the majority tied in knots.

Democrats can rail all day about global warming, but they will not get action.

The House of Representatives can pass all kinds of legislation, but the Senate can stop it among a whole host of differences in the rules.

In essence, the Republicans have the power to veto legislation within the legislative process, but they cannot initiate legislation.

Libertarian Republican #257

Hillary and Obama.

Hillary is not going to be President and Obama cannot afford to offend her if he wants to be President.

Obama should be made to pay through the nose to gain her support.

Agenda items should be included, people in the cabinet, and she should ask for anything else that she wants.

Obama may be a smart man, but dealing with women is a dicey proposition at best.

Women are not held to the same standards as men and as a result they can do things in dramatically different ways.

Libertarian Republican #256

McCain's Environmental Position.

McCain does not fit into either party's orthodoxy on the environment.

He has elements of both sides of the political spectrum.

The issue might be does he fit into the position of the general public.

The answer would depend on what the public thinks of his positions based on polling analysis.

In essence, McCain is his own man on the environment ad can he draw enough voters from the middle and keep the right wing at bay.

Libertarian Republican #255

John McCain and his voters.

Conservatives will vote for Bob Barr out of protest or vote for McCain in the sense there is no other choice.

McCain's voters are moderate and liberal Republicans, independents, and Conservative Democrats.

I think most people view Barry Obama as a classic Liberal Democrat and will vote or not vote for him on that point.

Hillary's voters will vote for McCain if he talk's their language, which is economic security, social conservatism, and nationalism in foreign policy.

These voters are basing their votes on a mix of racism and practicality.  Meaning, they see Obama as a limosine liberal and they have no use for such people under any circumstances.

McCain needs to steer clear of the race issue and stick to the issue of practicals.

Libertarian Republican #254

Hillary for Vice President or Senate Majority Leader.

The mistake the Clintons make time and time again is the fact that they know how to win elections, but not how to cash in in terms of achievements.

Being Vice President is a thankless job under the best of circumstances.  Yes, you have a chance to be President, but your more of an appendage.

I do not know what Senate Democrats think of Harry Reid, but Hillary provides a big Public Relations boost for them.

I have watched Senator Reid on ocassion.  He seems to be caught between his liberal wing and conservative wing.

In essence, does Hillary want to be Vice President or a Spokeswoman for Senate Democrats.

I do not care either way since I am not a democrat, but do you go where your talents lie.

Libertarian Republican #253

McCain and georgie bush.

Bush is a Christian Conservative and anti-government.

McCain is a Government Man and a Maverick.

Bush subscribe's to Calvin Coolidge on domestic issues and Harry Truman on Foreign Policy.

McCain is Teddy Roosevelt on domestic issues and silent on who he follows on Foreign Policy.

Bush is a typical do nothing Republican.

McCain, in essence, is a progressiv conservative republican.

Yes, they are different in dramatic ways.

Libertarian Republican #252

Teachers Unions.

I noticed that the Teachers Union in Seattle, Washington is blocking advanced courses funded by Microsoft.

I had a Grandmother who lived in the Northeast who was a teacher for 40 years and I know she was a member of the NEA.

Unions as a rule fear change because someone in their membership may lose their job.

Personally, if I was a Governor, I would issue an executive order taking over the school systems throughout the state.

I would then fire all staff and faculty and move to have the Washington State Education Association decertified.

Then I would rehire the staff and faculty on a case by case basis.

There is precedence for this at the federal level.  The Air Traffic Controllers who in 1981 went on strike and Reagan fired them.

It disrupted airports, but the law is the law.

The NEA is frustrating efforts to fix the schools when the approach Public Educators are continuing to use is no longer working.

Like I said, I would fire everyone at the same time since they are civil service and have no right to mandate policy.

Libertarian Republican #251

The General Election has started.

McCain is a one term or possibly two term President.

If I was him over the next six months, I would introduce the next generation of Conservative Leaders.

People who may serve in the media, government, academia, and all levels of society.

Such people become part of the intelligentsia or the chattering classes.

Who are these people?

Right now, their second and third level people who have not had public exposure.

A Transition from what's left of the World War II Generation, the current Baby Boomer Generation, Generation X, and most important Generation Y.

People who have a future in politics.

In essence, provide the Republicans with fresh blood.

Libertarian Republican #250

Somalia.

What to do about a nation torn apart by Civil War?

I would bring in The Republic of Korea, Taiwan, and Phillipines Special Forces.

These units served in the Vietnam War and were well respected by the North Vietnamese.

Its a question of ruthfulness.

Asians have a different value on life than we do and you might go to Brazil and other Latin American Countries for these type of people.

Normally, the Europeans handle Africa, but Somalia is a hard nut to crack.

We can provide air and sea power, while we let the Europeans decide what role they want to play.

You have to root out the troublemakers before you begin reconstruction.

Americans have proven that we cannot stomach Somalia II on the ground, but other nations are not tied to our value system.

In essence, ask other nations who know how to root out terrorists, have no ax to grind with the occupied country, and we in the United States stay out of the way.

Libertarian Republican #249

Iran.

Let's go slow on Iran, they have contradictions on us and we have contradictions with them.

Where barry is concerned?  The idea is from a Republican standpoint is lot like pushing him out on a limb of a tree and then sawing it off.

Can we make a deal with Iran?

Bush is useless.  McCain does not have control of the executive branch.  barry is silly on this issue.

barry has changed positions on Iran.  Why?  Its a variation on Nixon.

You cannot get the nomination without the Liberals, but you cannot win the presidency with just the Liberals.

Hence, take a Liberal Position in the primaries then go to the center in the general election since thats where the majority of voters are.

He's cynical, but not stupid.

Libertarian Republican #248

Hate Speech.

The Racists are now coming to the surface in terms of their hatred of black people.

How to deal with them?

Hate Speech may or may not be protected by the first amendment.

Is this a Homeland Security Issue?

Is this a Justice Department Issue?

If I was a Congressman or Senator who is supporting Obama I would not do any TV appearances with him.

It might be a better idea to minimize your association with him.

The excuse would be that you see him as a losing proposition and want to save your own seat.

Crude, but racism is a powerful force in American Politics.

The Agency could track these people making these calls.

National Security or Homeland Security is a necessary evil in our nation do to terrorists.

RICO offers a way to deal with harassment if its organized.

This is going to be an anti-barry vote rather than an anti-Democrat Vote.

The goal as a Republican is not to look like your taking advantage of an issue that is dangerous to all kinds of politicians.
